Campo Concentramento Per Internati Civili Bolzano

The Bolzano cap was one of the largest in Italy and was run by the German SS.  The camp opened in 1944 and closed in May 3, 1945.

It was originally built to hold 1500 but eventually had a capacity of 4000. During its existence it held over 11,000 mostly political opponents, Jews, and Romani.  The camp was ran as a slave labor camp and was the only one in Italy to have sub-camps.  Some of the prisoners especially the Jew and Romani were transported to other camps in Germany such as Mauthausen and Auschwitz. Notes were produced in 5 denominations 2, 5, 10, 50, and 500 lire.  Notes from this camp are very rare.
