South Africa Internment Camps
Internment camps were set up in South Africa for enemy aliens and Nazi sympathizers.
The camps were located in Andalusia, Baviaanspoort, and Koffiefontein, and Pietermaritzburg. The tokens were produced by the Royal Mint in Pretoria and were made of pressed fiber. Internees were not allowed to take tokens out of the camps and all remaining tokens were destroyed in Pretoria in 1946. Seven denominations were produced, 1 penny, 3 pence, 6 pence, 1 shilling, 2 shilling, 10 shilling, and 1 pound. The lower denominations are very scarce and the higher ones extremely rare.
