British War Department for Camps Located in France
General issue note used in POW camps administered by Great Britain and located in France.
The notes were issued in denominations of 50 centimes, 1 franc, 2 1/2 francs, 5 francs, 10 francs, 50 francs, and 100 francs. All denominations are rare with the highest being extremely rare. On the back of the notes are eight circles (see back of 5 shilling note). Every three months the notes were turned in and an ink stamp was applied to one of the circles. After all eight circles were stamped the note was destroyed. Many of the notes have the name or number of the camp stamped on the front and back. The camps were established in 1944 and held German POWs and closed in 1947.
